Celebrating 70 Years of Cultivated Learning and Charting a New Course

——— New Year's Message for 2026

Jiang Yunliang, Party Secretary

Qiu Limin, President

As the year draws to a close and a new beginning unfolds, with the hands of time turning gently to 2026, we reflect with gratitude and look forward with anticipation. On this occasion, we extend our sincere New Year’s greetings and blessings to all faculty, staff, and students; to our esteemed retired colleagues; to alumni both at home and abroad; and to friends from all walks of life who champion and support the development of our University.

Standing at the historical milestone of ZJNU’s 70th anniversary, we reflect on our endeavors of 2025. Every step of our journey has demonstrated remarkable resilience in the face of challenges, and every accomplishment has established a robust foundation for reaching even greater heights.

This year, we steadfastly upheld the leadership of the CPC and remained true to our original aspiration and mission. We earnestly studied and implemented the guiding principles of the Fourth Plenary Session of the 20th CPC Central Committee and the Eighth Plenary Session of the 15th Zhejiang Provincial Party Committee, while carrying out high-quality education in line with the spirit of the Central Eight Provisions. With strong political awareness, we successfully navigated a provincial inspection and conducted rigorous internal supervision. General Secretary Xi Jinping cordially met with our University’s cadres and teachers supporting work in Xinjiang, and the University was honored to receive a national flag from Tiananmen Square. We strengthened our full-time Party affairs team, established a provincial-level Pioneer Facilitator Network, and improved our Party member training system through three collective thematic lectures. We also inaugurated the United Front Home and launched the “Innovation ZJNU” initiative. Our successful reassessment allowed us to retain the esteemed honor of being a National Civilized Campus. Furthermore, one faculty unit was approved as a first-batch pilot for the Ministry of Education’s comprehensive reform of moral education mechanisms; one project was designated a provincial model for promoting New Era Civilization Practice; and our successful experiences were shared at the provincial conference on Party building in higher education institutions.

This year, we remained mindful of the responsibilities entrusted to us, pursued excellence with determination, and embarked on new chapters of development. Guided by General Secretary Xi Jinping’s important congratulatory letter and reply, we remained firm on the path of building a “comprehensive, high-level, and distinctive” university, fully advancing the “1368” strategic framework, and striving to reach new pinnacles in high-level university development. For 15 consecutive years, the University has ranked among the top 100 in influential national and international rankings. In the 2025 U.S. News World University Ranking, we proudly ranked 360th globally and 50th in China’s Mainland. Our peak-discipline development progressed steadily: Region and Country Studies achieved national top-tier status, ranking 2nd in China according to the Shanghai Ranking; meanwhile, Mathematics ranked among the top 7% in the 2025 ShanghaiRanking’s Best Chinese Subjects, and China’s first China–Africa Center for Mathematics was officially inaugurated.

This year, we strengthened integration and innovation, fostering unwavering dedication with an eye toward the future. Focusing on advancing our “Two Major Articles” in depth and substance, we established the Hangzhou School of Automation, the Institute of Trusted Intelligence, and the Institute of Technology Transfer and Achievement Transformation, while adding 10 new provincial and above-level innovation platforms. The number of ESI global top 1% disciplines increased to ten; sixteen disciplines were listed in the 2025 Shanghai Ranking's Global Ranking of Academic Subjects, and 19 were listed among China’s Best Disciplines. We secured 128 national-level projects and, for the first time, published a paper in Nature with ZJNU as the first affiliation. Thirteen new national-level talents joined our ranks; six experts were appointed to the Ministry of Education’s Faculty Development Steering Committee; one was honored as a National March 8th Red-Banner Pacesetter; and another received the Provincial Outstanding Teacher award. Scholars from our Institute of African Studies contributed to major outcomes, including the “Addis Ababa Consensus on the China-Africa Right to Development.” We also convened a conference to support Jinhua’s development into a high-level innovative city, further deepening university–community cooperation. In addition, we were selected for inclusion in the first batch of provincial university science parks.

This year, we remained committed to the fundamental mission of fostering virtue through education and cultivating new generations through integrated developmentWe advanced the New Era Moral Education Project, launched comprehensive curriculum evaluation reforms, and enhanced students’ AI literacy. Ten new national top undergraduate courses were approved; our textbook development earned a national second prize; and all 20 teacher-education programs successfully passed Level-II accreditation. Three Ph.D. students were selected for the Youth Talent Development Program of the China Association for Science and Technology; one received the National Excellence Award for Grassroots Employment; and two retired student soldiers participated in China’s Victory Day Parade. The province’s highest admission score reached a new record of 679, and the University received the National Scholarship Special Award for an impressive 13th consecutive year. Results in academic competitions were remarkable: we garnered 591 national awards; our teacher-education students ranked first nationwide in first prizes in teaching skills competitions; the number of special prizes in the “Challenge Cup” ranked 5th nationwide; and we secured the “Winner's Cup” for the 6th consecutive time. In national career planning competitions, we ranked third among all normal universities nationwide.

This year, we deepened openness and cooperation, joining hands with the world to forge a brighter future. Our alumnus Nama Didier Dieudonne, serving as the only representative of young sinologists who wrote to President Xi Jinping, delivered a keynote speech at the World Chinese Language Conference. The inaugural meeting of the Academic Committee of the China-Mozambique “Belt and Road” Joint Laboratory on Smart Agriculture (currently in preparation) was convened, and the province’s first “Zhejiang–Mozambique Silk Road Institute of Smart Agriculture” was established. We engaged deeply in the Forum on China-Africa Economic, Trade and Cultural Cooperation. We also co-hosted several key events: the Readers’ Forum on Xi Jinping: On Respecting and Protecting Human Rights, the First China–Africa Human Rights Seminar, the Symposium Commemorating the 25th Anniversary of the Forum on China–Africa Cooperation, and the Global South Media and Think Tank Forum. We launched the “China-Africa Ambassadors @ ZJNU” program and proudly appointed Hodan Osman Abdi, Ambassador of Somalia to China, as an Honorary Professor. Additionally, seven programs received approval from the China Scholarship Council. For the second consecutive year, our internationalization level ranked first among all Zhejiang provincial universities.

This year, we focused on enhancing quality and efficiency, building our University to benefit all faculty and students through shared progress. Major infrastructure upgrades proceeded in full swing, including the launch of student dormitory construction at the Xiaoshan Campus. Digital reform and intelligent transformation have advanced across the board, making the campus smarter and more efficient than ever. We rallied the heartfelt support of our alumni and integrated diverse resources to drive progress. Ten major livelihood initiatives advanced steadily; the campus environment continued to improve; patriotic public health campaigns were effective; and our joint security mechanisms with public security departments were significantly strengthened. Touching ceremonies honoring retired faculty and vibrant celebrations recognizing student achievements warmed hearts, significantly enhancing the sense of fulfillment, happiness, and security for everyone, and infusing our harmonious campus with vibrant vitality.

Seventy years of enlightened education, where virtue illuminates and inspires the world. The year 2026 marks the beginning of the “15th Five-Year Plan,” a pivotal year for building a high-level university, and above all, a joyous year celebrating the University’s 70th anniversary. This new journey is a glorious expedition filled with dreams. We will thoroughly implement the “Eighth-Eight Strategy,” remain focused on contributing to building a strong education nation, plan our development from a higher perspective, deepen reform with more concrete measures, and advance innovation with stronger resolve. We will endeavor to write a significant new chapter in our journey toward becoming a distinctive, first-class university and celebrate ZJNU’s 70th anniversary with outstanding achievements.

In the new year, may every one of our wishes find fulfillment. We wish everyone a happy New Year and a life of joy and harmony!
